My Great Grandfather Shive joined the 33rd at the onset of the formation of this glorious unit at the beginning. He was captured at the second battle of Gettysburg and sent to Point Look-out Prison, served a few months before signing on with the 1st U.S. Volunteer Infantry, being sent west to fight Sitting Bull, during a battle he became wounded by a arrow, then was released from service; He then joined the 13th Mississippi, fighting form the Souther cause once again with his brother; upuntil General Lee's surrender. Great Grandfather Shive traveled a lot before settling in Florida

His first fight was at New Bern, NC. He fought in 17 major battles before being captured during Gen. Lee's retreat from Gettysburg. Captured 14 July 1863 at Falling Waters Md. He was moved to Point Lookout Md. where he died 28 Jan 1864 of chronic diarhoea. He has 23 cards in his archival file. A letter to his father Asa survives and he writes about not having shoes or a blanket. The weather is rainy and he has had nothing to eat all day except for a small bit of wet flower that he had to buy. He was the father in law of my 3rd cousin 4 times removed Louisa E Lotharp.

He has 35 documents in his archival file.He was given a 30 day leave to recover from sickness 6 July 1863 - 6 Aug 1863. Address was Dockery's store in Richmond Co. NC. He was shot in the left knee during the battle of the Wilderness and discharged as disabled at Petersburg, Va. on 11 Feb. 1865. He was the husband of my 3 cousin 5 x removed. Martha Northam 1827 - 1893 on my Thomas line.
